Roland MT-32

Piccola prefazione
Tra la fine degli anni ottanta e l’inizio degli anni novanta il PC si proponeva in una nuova veste ai suoi utilizzatori: non più mero strumento di lavoro ma anche macchina per l’intrattenimento videoludico.
Quello che fino a poco prima era appannaggio di Amiga o Atari ST divenne possibile anche su PC grazie all’introduzione di nuovo hardware e schede di espansione sempre più potenti.
Se ad esempio prendiamo come riferimento l’anno 1987, vedremo che ci sono stati grossi cambiamenti. Primo fra tutti l’arrivo del primo processore a 32bit ad opera di Intel (80386) ma anche l’introduzione sul mercato di schede che hanno fatto la storia, tra cui la mitica Sound Blaster 1.0 e lo standard VGA grazie ad IBM.
Se prima l’utente PC doveva accontentarsi di 16 colori su schermo (EGA) e un sonoro ai limiti della decenza tramite speaker (a meno che non foste dei fortunati possessori di una scheda AdLib) con queste innovazioni si aveva finalmente la possibilità di grafica realistica a 256 colori, un processore di tutto rispetto e sonoro all’avanguardia (soprattutto con l’arrivo della Sound Blaster Pro con suono stereo).
Ma anche se non erano in molti a esserne a conoscenza, già verso la fine degli anni ottanta il PC poteva vantare un sonoro di qualità superiore, anche se purtroppo il tutto era fortemente limitato dal costo spropositato delle schede in questione (si parla di 800.000 lire e passa). Di cosa parliamo? Ma di Roland e dei suoi sintetizzatori MIDI ovviamente!

Installando i vari giochi PC (soprattutto avventure ma anche altri generi) spesso e volentieri, assieme alle classiche scelte dell’audio (PC Speaker, Covox, Adlib, Soundblaster ,etc), vi era la possibilità di scegliere anche un generico sonoro Roland o più nello specifico MT-32.

The Sharp X68000, often referred to as the X68k, is a home computer released only in Japan by the Sharp Corporation. The first model was released in 1987, with a 10 MHz Motorola 68000 CPU, 1 MB of RAM and no hard drive; the last model was released in 1993 with a 25 MHz Motorola 68030 CPU, 4 MB of RAM and optional 80 MB SCSI hard drive. RAM in these systems is expandable to 12 MB though most games and applications didn’t require more than two.

Sono finalmente riuscito a testare per benino il titolo in oggetto, quindi mi accingo a fare una mini comparativa delle due versioni.
Al momento non mi è stato possibile farne una video recensione per problemi logistici e di tempo ma a breve conto di integrarla.

OPZIONI:

La schermata delle opzioni FMT è maggiormente curata sia a livello estetico che per numero di opzioni (ha in più la possibilità di abilitare o meno lo sparo automatico e i continue) però ha due gravi lacune rispetto alla versione X68k. La prima è il fatto di poter scegliere solo tra bassa e alta risoluzione, mentre su X68k si può scegliere anche la modalità normale oppure wide (consigliata) e la seconda (nonchè più importante) è la possibilità di scegliere processore lento o veloce (Slow/Fast) che va a influire in maniera decisiva sulle prestazioni.

X68000 Games

Celebre per le sue conversioni Arcade Perfect l’X68000 annovera un parco titoli invidiabile (più di 2000) ma sfortunatamente molti preclusi ai non avvezzi alla lingua giapponese.
Da segnalare molte conversioni ad opera di Capcom, Konami, Namco e Taito più qualche esclusiva di ottimo livello, come ad esempio Cho Ren Sha, Akumajo Dracula o Nemesis 90.

Sharp MZ-800

The MZ-800 was launched in the U.K. in Jan. 1985, and reviewed in the PCW Magazine in Feb. 1985. By then the IBM-PC was getting firmly established, and the opening section of the review stresses that the MZ-800 is ‘not only compatible with the IBM PC, it‘s also the first machine to offer the user-friendly delights of Personal CP/M‘. lt then goes on to make a few criticisms about such minor points as the shape of the case, the lack of a CAPS LOCK key, the proximity of the RESET button to the volume control, and the fact that ‘getting inside the MZ-800 requires a determined effort‘.

Having got these off his chest, the reviewer turns to System Software i.e. MZ-800 Basic and PCP/M. This section is mainly descriptive, though by implication it seems to be approving. The ‘conclusion‘ starts by explaining that Sharp intend the MZ-800 as a business machine, gets in a few digs at the footprint of the machine when fitted with peripherals, and then concludes:

“The MZ-800, however, is the answer to Sharp‘s critics. Not only is it data-compatible with the IBM-PC, it features PCP/M. This is the ace in the hole and will guarantee the machine some success on the businessman‘s desk…. Having said that, Sharp Owners won‘t allow Sharp‘s marketing policy to dissuade them from thinking that this is Sharp‘s best home machine to date…. Its best hope is as an upgraded home machine ( where ) it is not only cheaper ( than its competitors ) but offers a new exciting operating system in PCP/M.“

The above review did not quote any firm prices, but an official Sharp price list around that time shows:

All these are EX VAT; in the same Magazine there are many new MSX machines from Japan e.g. SONY, SANYO, TOSHIBA, all in the price range £280 – £300.

Unfortunately, Sharp U.K.‘s policy of concentrating on the business market meant that the MZ-800 was not sold in the U.K. as a home computer; as a result there are few MZ-800‘s in the U.K. today. The situation is quite different on the European mainland, where Sharp G.m.b.H. made the MZ-800 a popular home computer.

As far as the SUC is concerned, the specification of the MZ-800 is so good that neither the hardware nor the software requires any ‘tweaking‘. But if you have an MZ-800, we offer a cheap 16K VRAM upgrade and all the known software, and we can advise on fitting disk drives if the machine does not already have them.

As a collector‘s item the MZ-800 is an attractive proposition, with its 40 / 80-column display, 2 built-in I/O slots, 16-colour hi-res, 3-channel sound, standard joystick ports, a Centronics printer I/F, and a switch to emulate the MZ-700. And DISKDEF.COM in PCP/M can redefine disk drives for other Sharp CP/M formats and two early IBM-PC CP/M-86 formats ( N.B. NOT for MS-DOS formats ! ). So the MZ-800 has to be near the top of anyone‘s shopping list – but you may well have to cross the Channel to find one!
